Montessori pedagogy explained simply

Montessori is a method created by Maria Montessori, which encourages the child's autonomy from a very young age. The idea? Allow your child to discover the world by themselves through an environment adapted to their size. It starts with the bedroom, where the bed plays a central role in their development and safety.

What is a Montessori bed?

A Montessori bed is designed to promote autonomy: placed at ground level, it allows the child to get in and out of bed alone. Unlike the crib, it offers more freedom and comfort. It can be used for sleeping, playing, reading, and helps the child better manage their own sleep rhythm.

At Chambrekids, these beds are equipped with a solid wood slatted bed base, offering comfortable and natural sleeping. This configuration allows your child to go to bed when tired and get up at their own pace, while being safe.

What mattress to choose for a Montessori bed?

The choice of mattress is essential to ensure comfort and safety. Choose a model large enough for the child to move freely without risk of falling. It should be fairly thin (about 13 cm) to stay close to the floor.

Avoid memory foam or spring mattresses, which can be uncomfortable and unsuitable for little ones' needs. Opt for a medium to high density foam mattress, like our 13 cm bamboo viscose mattress, perfectly suited to Montessori beds.

As for colors, neutral tones are recommended to avoid overstimulating the child.

From what age? Suitable bed for baby?

Montessori beds are ideal from the moment the child begins to move around on their own, generally around 2 or 3 years old. However, some parents choose to use a floor bed earlier, adding a barrier to secure the sleeping area.

There is no strict rule: it all depends on your child's rhythm. If you practice co-sleeping or breastfeeding, the floor bed can even make your nights easier. To learn more, feel free to check out our blog article What age for a Montessori floor bed?.

Design alternatives to the low Montessori bed: Teepee & House bed

The house models and teepee bring a playful and reassuring touch while maintaining the Montessori spirit. They remain close to the floor, with a bed base for more comfort, and create a comforting space for your child.

Our Capsule house bed, made of solid beech from eco-managed forests, is expandable from 90x140 to 90x190 cm. It combines design, comfort and ecology.

The teepee bed is just as aesthetic and stimulating, perfect for decorating a room while respecting freedom of movement.

Montessori house bed

We speak of a Montessori house bed when the bed is bordered by a frame that surmounts the entire mattress. Like a treehouse, this structure allows you to leave the bed on the floor while enhancing safety. Comfort is also increased thanks to the presence of a bed base, your child, and you with them, have better nights.

This structure is highly appreciated for its house design. Beyond these advantages, this "house" space represents a comforting landmark for your child. It constitutes a kind of real refuge that belongs only to them, in which they can snuggle up, sleep with their favorite cushions or relax with their toys and books. However, some children are frightened by the idea of sleeping with a sort of roof above their head, so it will all depend on your child's personality and their fear, or not, of small spaces.

Our Capsule Montessori house bed model is made from solid beech from eco-managed forests. This children's house bed is expandable with its extension kit, it transforms from 90x140 cm into a 90x190 cm bed. It's a floor bed with a slatted bed base.

Montessori teepee bed

The teepee bed resembles the house bed point by point in its originality. The principle remains the same here too: the mattress is placed directly on the floor and your child can continue to move around as they wish. Its real interest is to bring an additional aesthetic character to your child's room while improving their sleep quality. Indeed, while its shape is very fun, reminiscent of the typical dwelling of Native Americans, the teepee bed is also equipped with a bed base and thus provides more comfort. It still allows your child to consolidate their autonomous decision-making and awaken their senses as well as their mobility.

And for the little ones? a floor bed with barrier for baby

If you are considering a Montessori bed before age 3, add a barrier to ensure safety. Easy to install, it adapts to any type of bed and prepares your child to transition from a crib to a child's bed. It's an ideal solution for a smooth transition.
