How to arrange baby's room?

A happy event has been announced. Baby is on the way and will be joining the family in a few weeks. You're naturally already thinking about setting up their room. You may have discovered that the range of nursery furniture is considerable. So, as new parents, how do you find your way? How do you make wise but aesthetic choices to best arrange and decorate baby's room? What are the essential elements for creating baby's universe, and those that will be decided more according to your preferences? As you know, in the first months of their life, your baby will spend most of their days sleeping or resting. And, as their sleep time decreases, their playtime and activity time will increase. All the more reason for you to focus on optimizing baby's room, according to your desires, your tastes, but also, it cannot be denied, your budget.

Is it essential for your baby to have their own room?

Of course, this will primarily depend on the space you have available in your home and your wishes in this regard. In any case, the important thing is that baby has their own space, even if they share their room with a big brother or big sister. This area should be as quiet as possible, and therefore, as much as possible, away from the daily noises of the house. A room facing the garden will be preferable to a room facing the street. The ideal temperature for baby's space should be between 18 and 20 °C. What are the essentials for baby's room?

1. The baby bed (cradle or crib with bars)

An essential piece of furniture in baby's room, the baby bed with bars (or the cradle, in the first three months of the newborn's life) is the essential element of baby's room. Several models of baby beds exist: classic crib with bars, combined bed or even the convertible bed. 2. The changing table

Even though it's still possible to change baby on a bed, a changing table remains essential in baby's room since, with its appropriate height, it will prevent you from bending over. Moreover, you will have all the elements you need permanently at hand: diapers, wipes, spare clothes, etc.

3. A storage unit

As you know as well as we do, there's never enough space to store everything! The same is true in baby's room. A storage unit will allow you to store their diapers in advance, their hygiene and care products, and of course their clothes. By grouping all baby's products and belongings in one place, you're sure to always find what you need. A real comfort when, in the first weeks of baby's life, new parents sometimes don't have a minute to themselves! This piece of furniture can also take the form of a dresser. Let's specify here that there's no rush to buy a wardrobe while baby is small. It's up to you to see if this is a purchase you want to make right away or later.

4. A toy chest

Toys accumulate quickly, very quickly. There's a good chance you'll experience this soon! Between birth gifts (and those that will follow) and the games and toys you will offer your baby yourself, it will quickly be necessary to consider a sustainable storage solution. The toy chest is, admittedly, not really an essential for baby's room, but we warmly recommend it. It's an element that is both functional and aesthetic, whose purchase you will never regret since it will serve for many years.

Tips for arranging baby's room

Here are some ideas to keep in mind when thinking about your baby's universe within your home.

1. Opt for soft and pastel colors

There will always be time later to reevaluate the soft yellow of the room's walls! But, in the first years of a child's life, soft and/or pastel colors such as pale yellow, azure blue or soft pink are the most recommended. They create a gentle universe for baby, as they are not visually aggressive. Terracotta color for a room is also an interesting option. You can stick a frieze representing childish drawings or the little ones' heroes, to be installed at a third of the wall's height. Stickers can also complete the decoration. Applied to walls or furniture, they will give an additional decorative touch to baby's room.

2. Place baby's bed perpendicular to the door

Thus, when you go to check on your baby's sleep during the day or during the night, you will simply need to open the door slightly to make sure everything is fine. You won't have to enter the room, at the risk of waking your little angel. This tip is not anecdotal, since in the first weeks of their life, baby will sleep up to 16 hours a day.

Avoid placing baby's bed in front of a window. The brightness could disturb your little one's sleep, although there's always the possibility of installing blackout curtains.

3. Choose good quality bed linen

The best choice in terms of fabric for baby's bed linen remains cotton, which you could prefer organic according to your personal aspirations. Other solutions such as satin, wool or velvet remain possible. On the other hand, avoid synthetic materials if you can, as they can potentially cause allergies and other undesirable skin reactions. This is also valid for baby's clothes.

Similarly, choose paints without VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and furniture assembled without glue. Solid wood, although expensive, remains the best choice for children's rooms. 

Air out baby's room regularly and widely. Once or twice a day, for about ten minutes, even in winter.

4. Invest in a quality baby monitor

To monitor your baby remotely, without waking them, while continuing your own activities, a baby monitor is the ideal tool. There are many models, some equipped with a camera or night light, others that can play lullabies. This type of device is not superficial and we highly recommend it: it's the price of your peace of mind!

5. Consider the usefulness of an armchair and a rug

An armchair placed in baby's room will be very useful for soothing baby and rocking them in the evening at bedtime, or during untimely awakenings during the night. Breastfeeding mothers can settle comfortably there with their little one to feed them, both at night and during the day, away from prying eyes if that is their wish. Mothers bottle-feeding will also be well settled, all in a space specially designed for this purpose.

In addition to adding a nice decorative touch to baby's room, a rug will, for example, help reduce the noise caused by a creaky floor. Remember to stick anti-slip strips on the back of the rug to avoid any risk of falling, it's important.

What decoration for a baby boy's room? 

Blue, in general, is the color we think of first for decorating a baby boy's room. However, there are many options and tones that will allow you to create a warm atmosphere adapted to your child. Blue-gray, turquoise, navy blue or even petrol blue are good alternatives that have the merit of being original, but also of adapting to your child's growth. More neutral than a too bright blue, these colors will indeed see your child grow, as they won't tire of them as they get older. Moreover, these tones are very modern: you can thus decorate your baby's room in the image of your interior. Beyond blue, you can opt for a range of pastel green, chick yellow, but also indigo, through mauve or even purple which are far from being only colors suitable for little girls today. For an even more neutral, even mixed decoration, you can go for beige, off-white or pure white to harmonize baby's room with the rest of your home.

What decoration for a baby girl's room? 

While blue is the most common color for decorating a little boy's room, pink is an option often preferred by parents for a baby girl's room. The advantage of pink lies in its almost infinite variations: candy pink, pastel, powder, bright, or even fuchsia. Pink is a vibrant color, but also soft, which harmonizes with many tones such as off-white, beige or natural wood. To allow your daughter to grow with her environment and to break away from clichés, you can opt for neutral and mixed colors. Anthracite gray, apple green or azure are interesting options for the room's furnishings. To maintain a "girly" and delicate character, think of decorative accessories, details such as small garlands, crib bumpers, lamps or removable wall stickers to brighten up the room.

Similar to themes for a baby boy's room, think about patterns to personalize your daughter's room. Princesses, butterflies, fairies or unicorns, these great classics are often very successful with little girls. These are timeless options that you can easily combine with dinosaur figurines or small cars if your daughter shows an interest in these toys that are no longer reserved only for boys!
