What is Montessori pedagogy?
The Montessori pedagogy, invented by Maria Montessori, is designed as an innovative educational method. It places great emphasis on making children independent and autonomous by promoting their relationship with their external environment. More than theoretical learning, indeed, Montessori pedagogy prefers practical teachings, the use of senses, as well as a unique and privileged relationship between the child and the educator. It aims to follow the child at their own pace and goes beyond the strict framework of school. Many parents then decide, from birth, to implement Montessori pedagogy at home. Thus, furnishing is of great importance. Domestic spaces are not originally designed for children, while Montessori furniture adapts to everyone's size, and this, in complete safety.
What is the benefit of switching to Montessori furniture for your child?
The home is the first environment in which your baby grows and develops. It's here that their first motor skills are born and develop. Your child learns to sit properly, stand up, walk, eat, sleep, and even dress themselves. If the right tools are made available, they have every chance to learn to do all these daily gestures autonomously. One of the primary principles of Montessori furniture is to be adapted to the child's size, but also to offer a space where each object has its place and purpose. Maria Montessori considered, indeed, that the environment in which the child evolves should be based on order, simplicity, and the ambition to reproduce the adult space as faithfully as possible. Montessori furnishings thus avoid clutter and prefer neutral and subdued colors.
How does Montessori furniture differ from classic furniture?
Ordinary furniture is not adapted to your child, especially when they are young, for the simple reason that it is inaccessible, even impressive and dangerous. While it is often recommended to place objects at height to prevent your child from playing with them, in other cases, it is very beneficial for them to have access to develop their autonomy. Let's take the example of the kitchen: certainly, one must be vigilant so that your child does not handle sharp objects and does not spill anything. However, under your supervision, it is entirely possible to involve your child in meal preparation, vegetable peeling, or dough making, by putting them at your height. On a stepladder or step stool, your child might slip. You can therefore opt for a Montessori learning tower, also called an observation tower. This piece of furniture allows the child, in complete safety, to take ownership of the space, touch objects, and observe your gestures, at your height. Composed of small stair steps and a guardrail, the learning tower will be your number one ally to awaken your child's curiosity. Montessori furniture has the particularity of being adjustable at will, so your child can participate in all family activities. They gain confidence and maturity. They also learn to know their preferences and abilities.
Montessori furniture for all rooms of the house
Your child's room is the first space they will make their own. It is first in this environment that Montessori furnishings will demonstrate all their benefits. Back from daycare or school, your child can continue their learning and consolidate it if you provide them with the required materials and tools. However, the bedroom is not the only place in the house where Montessori furniture can prove beneficial in your child's development. From the kitchen to the bathroom, through the living room or playroom, the options are indeed numerous.
Reading freely
Even if your child is too young to read, you can organize a space to stimulate their imagination and dream freely. Books contribute to a child's development in three ways: from a sensory perspective (especially through touch-and-feel books that allow children to explore different textures), from an emotional perspective, and from an intellectual perspective. There are various child-height display stands where you can place your selection, as well as cushions to create a comfortable and comforting space. A house bed is also an excellent choice for your child to create their own universe.
A space to play, have fun, and learn in a playful way
Beyond books, toys are also of immense importance for your child's development. You can create, in your child's room or in your living room, a corner for fun activities, separate from the reading space. To avoid excessive stimulation, prefer minimalism: wooden or sensory toys, or puzzles that will stimulate your child's curiosity. To save space, but also to gather all your child's toys (and make it easier to introduce them to tidying up), you can choose a wall mat on which you hang their favorite toys. Felt boards or even instruments adapted for little ones like miniature pianos are elements that will integrate perfectly with Montessori furniture such as the Nido. From the Italian word for "nest", it lives up to its name. It's a cocoon composed, for example, of a mat, a mirror, and toys, designed as an awakening environment. This space is rather dedicated to little ones, until they learn to walk.
A bathroom that develops the child's autonomy
The bathroom is a space that little ones struggle to make their own. It's difficult to learn to brush your teeth or wash your hands, like a grown-up, without being able to reach the sink! A step stool, placed in front of the sink, can make this activity more accessible. However, it doesn't help the child open and close the faucet or control the water temperature. If you have space, you might prefer a low cabinet on which you'll place a steel basin, a pitcher, an unbreakable mirror hung on the wall, small towels, and everything needed to wash up. Thanks to this space, your child learns to know themselves in front of the mirror as well as to wash their hands, face or teeth, to comb their hair or even to blow their nose. They thus become aware of the importance of taking care of oneself. You can also opt for the Montessori tower which will easily find its place in all rooms of the house.
The Montessori kitchen to make your child independent
Your child loves to imitate you, and this is how they learn best. Montessori furniture allows them to learn by observing you, and this is especially true in the kitchen. Although it may seem surprising, Montessori pedagogy recommends using breakable dishes. This way, your child can understand that fragile objects break if they fall. They gain responsibility and learn to take care of plates or glasses. Similarly, instead of a high chair, you can opt for a small table and chair, practical for snack times that your child can then have independently. They can sit down and leave the table, fold their napkin, or even serve themselves food under your supervision and caring gaze. If you don't have enough space to add a separate table, you can always choose a high chair by removing the tray and bringing the chair closer to the table where you eat. This way, you continue to share the meal with your child while offering them the opportunity to develop their fine motor skills.
Going to bed peacefully with a Montessori bed
Choosing a bed is always a real puzzle for parents. Between low beds, cribs, co-sleeping with parents, simple mattresses on the floor, the options are numerous. Until your child can crawl, it is recommended to have them sleep in a crib, for safety reasons. However, as soon as they are able to move on their own, around six months, Montessori pedagogy prefers mattresses installed directly on the floor. Your child can access their sleeping space by their own means, which offers them greater independence. Take certain precautions: don't leave any objects that your child could swallow or with which they could hurt themselves, choose unbreakable mirrors, install outlet covers, etc. You can create a small raised space around the mattress to avoid any falls and gradually increase the height of the bed as your child grows. In stores, you can find beds that offer this evolution thanks to adjustable and adaptable elements. Discover all our Montessori beds.
