What is a bunk bed?

A bunk bed is a piece of furniture that stacks two sleeping areas, with a lower bed at standard height, similar to a simple children's bed. Above it is a structure equipped with a small ladder allowing access to the upper bed. The two beds are therefore arranged one above the other, hence the name "bunk beds".

The bunk bed is a solution generally chosen when two children share the same room, thus saving space in the room.

What type of bunk bed to choose?

The choice of your bunk bed will of course depend on your child's needs but also on the dimensions and space you have in the child's room.

The classic bunk bed

The bunk bed is a bed often appreciated by children. Indeed, with this system, your children each have their own bed, their own space and can at the same time enjoy each other's presence. This is why a classic bunk bed consisting of two sleeping areas one below the other is a very good option.

The separable bunk bed

More original but also and above all very practical, there is the separable bunk bed. It is a classic bunk bed but has the particularity of transforming into two single children's beds. The separable bunk bed is clever and offers the possibility for your children to have a distinct space or even their own room.

There is also a convertible bunk bed model that transforms into a loft bed which will allow you to integrate a desk or any other storage.

The 3-person bunk bed

Do you need a third sleeping area in the room? Opt for a 3-person bunk bed. At Chambrekids, most of our bunk bed models transform into 3-person bunk beds. To do this, nothing could be simpler: add a trundle drawer under the lower bed. Use it as you wish in the room of your choice, and store it away to recover space. The ideal bed when you have a third child or to accommodate a friend for a few nights.

If you don't need the 3rd bed, you can then install a storage drawer in your bunk bed to save even more space. On an occasional and exceptional basis, this storage drawer can accommodate a mattress for a maximum weight of 50 kg. The bunk bed bases which are made of solid pine slats can accommodate a person with a maximum weight of 100 kilos.

From what age can your children sleep in a bunk bed?

Your child must be at least 6 years old to sleep in the upper bed of a bunk bed. The same applies to all elevated beds (bunk bed, loft bed, mid-height bed). These are indeed the French safety standards in force that we obviously recommend applying.

Although equipped with a safety rail all around the sleeping area, your child must be autonomous enough to climb up and down the ladder of their bunk bed. While your child's size is not a determining criterion, their autonomy will be particularly important.

Our bunk beds all comply with mandatory safety standards for sleeping on elevated beds. We have notably equipped our bunk beds with anti-fall guardrails on the upper bed.

What ceiling height do you need in your room?

When you set up a bunk bed in a child's room, don't forget to check the ceiling height.

Indeed, check the space between the ceiling and the base so that your child can lie down without hitting their head. We recommend respecting a space of 60 cm between the mattress and the room's ceiling. At Chambrekids, we adapt to all children's room sizes, which is why we offer bunk beds of different heights.
