The 5 advantages of a loft bed

Categories: Children's Room

The loft bed has become very trendy and its popularity continues to rise. It provides all the comfort for a good night's sleep and allows better use of your living space volume.

This type of bedding also has the advantage of appealing to everyone, young and old. Here are 5 good reasons to adopt a loft bed.

1. Optimizing volume, thanks to the loft bed

Many households don't have enough space. However, the primary advantage of a loft bed is that it saves you space. You no longer use only the floor space of your rooms, but also their volume. Thanks to the elevated bed, the floor surface allows you to make various arrangements. You can use the space underneath to install a desk, a play area, a reading corner, etc.

The loft bed adapts to the needs of the room's occupant. Thus, you won't use the space in the same way for an 8-year-old child, a teenager, or an adult. A student living in a studio apartment, for example, will find it very advantageous to install their desk under their bed, while a child might prefer to use blankets and curtains to 'build' a fort.

On the other hand, you can select a loft bed that includes storage. Clothes closets or a bookshelf can be arranged as pillars of the bed. The ladder access is also an opportunity to place storage boxes. All these ingenious arrangements prevent you from filling your room with other furniture, to save even more space.

2. A child over 6 years old can sleep safely in it

The manufacture and use of loft beds are strictly regulated. Exceeding 60 centimeters above the ground, it is considered a high bed and must comply with specific regulations.

The first condition requires that a child be at least 6 years old to sleep in it.

The loft bed can be installed at different heights: from 1.20 meters for a bed considered "mid-height", to over 2 meters high. Generally, its height is between 1.50 and 2.15 meters.

To comply with current standards for elevated beds, the loft bed must be equipped with safety devices addressing two major dangers: falling and trapping a limb or head in the bed structure. An approved elevated bed will bear the NF D 62 100 standard.

In any case, the bed itself must imperatively be equipped with safety barriers covering the perimeter of the bed, with a minimum height of 16 centimeters from the top of the mattress. The only place where the barrier is interrupted corresponds to the width of the ladder.

Finally, the manufacturer adds a marking to indicate the maximum thickness of the mattress to preserve the minimum height of the barrier.

It's worth noting that in addition to sleeping safely, children often love the elevated position. It gives them a unique viewpoint over their entire room, which adds to the feeling of protection, like being in a castle tower.

3. Adults have also taken a liking to loft beds

Adults are increasingly appreciating the advantages of loft beds. This type of bed is ideal for lofts or places where rooms are too small. It provides an ingenious solution to optimize your space and include other elements or furniture that you will probably need.

Adult beds generally take up more space due to their size, so putting them higher will allow you to take advantage of the space underneath. It is very common for the space underneath to be set up as an office area. If you don't need an office, you can create a corner for rest and relaxation where you can enjoy a good book or watch a video.

In a studio apartment or loft, the space under an adult loft bed can be entirely dedicated to storing your various belongings. The bed then rests on a large wardrobe, which allows you to gain considerable volume in your living space.

4. Savings on purchase

The loft bed is a bit more expensive to purchase, but you have to consider the elements it includes: desk, bookshelf, clothes closet, wardrobe, storage boxes behind the ladder, etc. These are all pieces of furniture that you don't have to buy separately. This also makes your purchases easier, as you don't have to worry about the compatibility of furniture, since they are designed to be one unit.

A good quality loft bed is designed to last. A child sleeping in it from the age of 6 can keep it until adulthood. They may even return to sleep in it occasionally after leaving home, for a weekend or during holidays.

If the use of the loft bed is intended to be temporary, for example for a student or a young adult living in a small space, it can easily be resold second-hand when the person moves into a larger space.

Finally, the loft bed can be used as an extra bed. Thus, you benefit from the volume underneath all year round to store things or set up a relaxation area; when you have friends over, you have all the comfort to keep them for a sleepover. You avoid buying an extra bed and gain storage space.

5. There is a multitude of loft bed designs

Thanks to the popularity of loft beds, manufacturers are multiplying models and offering very diverse designs and colors. Before selecting the right bed, think about how you plan to use the space under the bed. You can find all sorts of built-in arrangements: closets, wardrobes, desks, drawers, etc. Some manufacturers offer particularly ingenious models, such as a fold-away desk, or evolving models that you can arrange differently as the child grows.

As for colors, the range is just as wide, allowing you to perfectly integrate your loft bed into your decor.
