How to get baby to sleep quickly?

Categories: Advice

Sleep is very precious for a child and even more so when it comes to a baby. It's during these moments of rest that their brain processes what they've learned. It is therefore very important to preserve baby's sleep and help them fall asleep if necessary. Sometimes the moment of falling asleep can be difficult for parents and/or take a long time. Discover some recommendations and tips to help baby fall asleep quickly.

Creating a peaceful and healthy environment

The first step is to ensure you create a peaceful, healthy and comfortable environment for your child. This includes, for example, choosing the right bed. The convertible baby bed is an excellent choice, as it allows you to go from a crib to a big kid bed without having to buy new furniture (this is notably the case with our Icone convertible baby bed). You can even choose a convertible baby bed in three stages: bassinet, crib, child's bed.

We recommend opting for a wooden convertible baby bed. This way you can choose a sustainable piece of furniture. Choose a convertible baby bed made from wood sourced from eco-managed forests, with materials low in formaldehyde and solvent-free paints. This way, you protect baby from the presence of volatile organic compounds.

Beyond the convertible baby bed, there are other types of baby beds such as twin baby beds, original baby beds like a plexiglass baby bed for example, or even combination baby beds that integrate several pieces of furniture in one.

The room where baby sleeps should be a familiar and reassuring place. It's also important to ensure that the temperature is between 18°C and 20°C in winter (do your best in summer without using air conditioning when baby is in the room) and that the humidity level is between 30% and 70% (more information on this subject here).

Tips to try

There are many ways to soothe your child to help them fall asleep. We have listed below some tips that we think are worth trying, but ultimately your child will guide you towards what soothes them.

The evening feeding

The evening feeding is a very good way to help baby fall asleep. Pleasant and comforting, this moment allows baby to be closest to you. If you opt for a feeding 10 minutes before bedtime, baby will be digesting when it's time to sleep which will help them find sleep.

Skin-to-skin contact

While skin-to-skin contact is recommended from birth, it is of course appropriate to continue practicing it at home. The warmth, parent's scent, and heartbeat are all comforting sensations for baby that will help them feel reassured.

The lullaby

Among the rituals to adopt at baby's bedtime, the lullaby is a great classic. This gentle melody is also a way to soothe baby. You can sing it yourself, but also use a mobile or any other device offering this type of song. Just be sure to keep the volume low.

White noise

Some children find true comfort in white noise. Whether it's the sound of waves or wind, these sounds create drowsiness, which helps baby fall asleep. You can opt for playing white noise at a low volume while rocking baby to help them find sleep.

Swaddling

Swaddling is a technique that involves wrapping baby in a cloth to limit their movements and calm their agitation. It suits some children, but not others at all - it's up to you to see what your baby thinks of it. There are many online tutorials to learn how to swaddle a baby.

The pacifier

Sucking is a reassuring movement for baby. This action releases endorphins which will help reduce their stress. Using a pacifier is therefore a very good way to help baby calm down at bedtime.

The comfort object

The comfort object, also called a transitional object, is a familiar object that baby takes with them during moments of separation for reassurance. It is therefore perfectly possible to use it at night to help them fall asleep more easily.

Schedules

For baby to find sleep, it is essential to establish a rhythm that suits them and that will be respected every day. This applies to bedtime, but also to meals for example, so try as much as possible to ensure that schedules are respected. Naturally, baby should start to find calm at bedtime.

A bath and a massage

If bath time is a soothing moment for your child, you can incorporate it into the evening routine to help them relax. You can also opt for a baby massage. Massage can help your child find sleep, but also relieve their minor discomforts. There are even professionals who teach parents how to massage their baby.

A sleep consultant or advisor

If after several weeks you can't manage to soothe them in the evening to help them fall asleep, you can seek advice from a sleep consultant or advisor. This is a baby sleep specialist who will suggest new approaches to explore based on your child.
