How to choose the right duvets and pillows for children?

Categories: Children's World

When little ones move to a big bed, they not only leave behind their crib but also their sleeping bag to enjoy a duvet and pillow. This is a big change in the lives of little ones that begins first and foremost with choosing these bedding accessories. So what are the criteria for choosing a pillow and children's duvet well? Here is all our advice to make the right choices and ensure all the necessary comfort for your child.

At what age should a child sleep with a duvet and pillow?

Before purchasing a pillow and children's duvet, you should ensure that your child is actually of the required age. Indeed, the duvet and pillow are not for immediate use. From returning from the maternity ward and as long as your child sleeps in a crib, using a sleeping bag (or sleep sack) is recommended. It helps keep little ones warm while limiting the risk of suffocation. It's only once installed in a big bed, or a children's bed, that the use of a duvet and pillow is possible.

The transition to a big bed is recommended when the child starts trying to escape from their crib by climbing over the rail. Generally, this occurs at around age 2.

Choosing the duvet

The first step in equipping your child's bed is choosing the duvet. It's what will ensure comfortable and warm nights for your child.

Which type of duvet to choose for a child?

Several criteria should be considered when choosing the children's duvet that will accompany your child's nights:

  • The filling: It can be made of different materials such as siliconized wadding, down, bamboo, wool, etc. Make sure to choose something light and airy.
  • The cover: Cotton is generally recommended as it is light and breathable, perfect for healthier bedding.
  • Warmth rating: Most often, what we call a warmth rating is associated with the product. There are notably summer or winter duvets. Having two types of duvets allows you to adapt your child's bedding according to the season.
  • Oeko-Tex certification: Essential, it ensures that your duvet is free from certain substances.
  • Manufacturing origin: Whenever possible, opting for made in France will always be preferable to choose a quality product.

What size duvet for a child's bed?

Once you have identified the duvet model that seems most suitable, don't forget to check the desired children's bed duvet size.

If you have chosen a 70x140 cm children's bed like a 2-year-old child's bed or an evolving baby bed, there's no need to take too large a format that would extend beyond the feet. A 140x150 cm format will be perfectly suitable.

However, if you have decided to opt for a standard format children's bed of 90x190 cm, it's better to choose a children's duvet of 140x200 cm.

These are the dimensions you should refer to when choosing the appropriate duvet cover.

Choosing the pillow

Then comes the time to choose a children's pillow that is also perfectly adapted.

What type of pillow for a child?

Here too, different criteria should be considered to choose a children's pillow that is comfortable and adapted to the needs of little ones, such as:

  • The filling: Here too, it can be polyester, down, latex...
  • The cover: For this, we recommend a natural, breathable material like cotton, preferably organic.
  • Thickness: For little ones, it's recommended to have a pillow that is as flat as possible. Most often, it is advised not to exceed 5 cm in thickness.
  • Oeko-Tex certification: Here too, the presence of the Oeko-Tex label is a true guarantee of quality and safety for parents.
  • Manufacturing origin: Once again, Europe and France are to be favored for a more qualitative and eco-responsible product.

What size pillow for a child?

Regarding the size of a children's pillow, several options are available to you:

  • 40x60 cm: These are the dimensions of what we call a baby pillow. Slightly smaller than the adult version, these dimensions allow you to choose a product suitable for young children.
  • 60x60 cm: These are the standard dimensions for a classic square pillow.
  • 50x70 cm: These are the standard dimensions for a classic rectangular pillow.

What about the mattress?

Once you have chosen a children's duvet and pillow, don't forget to also address the subject of the children's mattress. Indeed, the children's mattress also has a major role to play in providing all the necessary comfort for good sleep quality, and a good mattress helps to better understand your child's sleep.

Therefore, opt for a mattress preferably made of natural materials such as bamboo or organic cotton for example. Also ensure the presence of labels such as Oeko-Tex or Certipur for example. Moreover, make sure to choose your model from a brand specialized in children's bedding to choose a high-quality product.
