How to choose the bed for your guest room?

Categories: Advice

Are you used to hosting your loved ones for one night or even several? Having a guest room available is often very appreciable. While the care given to this room might sometimes be secondary, you can certainly make it a welcoming and comfortable place for your friends and family, starting with the choice of bed.

Why have a guest room?

When you have an extra room in your home, several options are possible to find a use for this space. Between the office, gym, laundry room, dressing room, or playroom, it's also possible to opt for what we call a guest room.

This room is dedicated to hosting your loved ones for sleeping when they're passing through the area or after a party that runs late, for example. Comfortably installed in the guest room, friends or family have an intimate space where they can sleep without disturbing or being disturbed.

Which bed for a guest room?

To furnish your guest room, you have a choice between different bed formats depending on your needs and preference.

Single or double bed

The single or double bed is the most traditional format. You opt for a slatted frame or an upholstered base with a mattress and you're all set. This solution is particularly suitable if the room is used only as a bedroom.

Daybed

The daybed is the perfect solution if the room also serves as an office, for example. Thus, the daybed harmonizes better in the space. You can choose a single daybed or a double daybed with a trundle bed style like our Boreal daybed for example. The trundle daybed contains a drawer housing a pull-out bed to provide two sleeping spaces while taking up minimal space.

Bed with storage

To save storage space, you can also opt for a bed with storage. There are several formats, such as the bed equipped with a bed drawer, as well as the storage bed. These additional storage spaces can allow you to store duvets and pillows, shoes, sports equipment, etc.

What criteria for choosing a guest room bed?

To choose the perfect bed for your guest room, you can consider different criteria such as:

  • Size: It must correspond to the available space in the room and the number of people who will occupy the bed.
  • Materials: Prefer FSC or PEFC certified solid wood or panels with low formaldehyde content to choose a more eco-responsible and healthier piece of furniture. Solvent-free varnishes and paints are also preferable.
  • Place of manufacture: Made in France and made in Europe are preferable for quality, durability, and proximity.
  • Brand: Favor French brands with genuine furniture-making expertise.
  • Price: Depending on several criteria, you can expect to pay between 300 euros and 1200 euros for an adult bed.

What size bed for one person?

Most often, a single bed measures 90x190 cm or 90x200 cm. This second measurement is slightly larger and allows tall people to be more comfortable.

What size bed for two people?

If you want to install a double bed in your guest room, you'll usually have the choice between dimensions of 140x190 cm or 140x200 cm, and 160x200 cm. These are the standard dimensions found for most double beds. The first is the smallest measure for two people, the second is slightly larger, and the last allows you to opt for a queen size bed. There are also king size formats with measurements of 180x200 cm and 200x200 cm.

Also make sure you know the dimensions of your guest room bed to know which duvet size to choose afterward.

How to set up a guest room?

Once your bed and mattress are installed, you can add some other furniture to make the place more welcoming. You can opt for a dresser or a small wardrobe for example. Guests who will stay for a certain duration will appreciate being able to store their belongings there.

You can also add a comfortable armchair if space allows. The presence of a dressing table, a small desk, or a small table can also be appreciated. Bedside tables will also be very welcome in a guest room.

How to decorate a guest room?

For decoration, opt for something that will suit everyone, but also reflects your style and matches the rest of the house's decor. Since it's a room used more occasionally, you can go for some whimsy with color on the walls for example. You can add some wall frames, curtains, a beautiful floor rug, a large mirror, a pretty accent lamp, a bouquet of flowers (or dried flowers), etc.

Of course, make sure to choose nice bed linens, but also provide a bolster and two comfortable pillows. Having an extra blanket and towels for the bathroom can also be a real plus, all matching the room's colors of course.

Let your imagination run wild to create a beautiful room where your guests will feel comfortable. The goal is for them to feel welcome in an environment that's warmer than a hotel, but just as comfortable.
