A healthy and sustainable floor for a child's room

Depending on the family, preparing or redecorating a child's room involves projects of varying scope. If the floor covering in this room is too damaged, too old, or simply no longer to your taste, it's time to change everything! However, some ideas are better than others, especially when you want to create a room that is both healthy and sustainable. So which flooring should you choose in this regard?

What criteria should be considered for flooring in a child's room?

First of all, note that several major criteria should be considered when choosing flooring for a child's room:

  • Safety: the chosen flooring must not present any danger to the child, both in its use (such as a very slippery floor for example) and by its mere presence (it must produce as few volatile organic compounds as possible and not contain harmful chemicals).
  • Ease of maintenance: nobody wants a floor that's complex to maintain and keep clean, so it's better to keep it simple.
  • Comfort: the chosen material must be pleasant under feet and for daily use, don't forget that your child often plays on the floor.
  • Durability: it must be durable over time and if possible eco-friendly to minimize environmental impact.
  • Price: the cost must match your budget, also consider that the installation of certain floor coverings can be done by amateurs (if you have DIY enthusiasts in your circle, now is the time to ask for their help).

Advantages and disadvantages of different possibilities

When it comes to flooring, there are many possibilities available today. Here are, in our opinion, the advantages and disadvantages of the solutions most commonly found in a child's room.

Floating hardwood flooring

✅ Floating hardwood flooring is a very suitable solution for a child's room. When chosen from eco-managed forests, it is both natural and eco-friendly. Durable over time when opting for a quality model, it brings warmth and comfort to the room. Moreover, it is very easy to install and can cover the floor of a room in just one day of work.

⚠️ However, be sure to choose a good quality model, as it can be sensitive to scratches and impacts. Therefore, its cost can quickly rise.

Linoleum

✅ Linoleum, also called lino, has the advantage of being offered at very affordable prices. It offers a wide range of colors and patterns, and is also very easy to install. Comfortable, it is also very easy to clean. Furthermore, there are now products made from natural or recycled materials for example.

⚠️ However, lino can easily be damaged over time with use. Moreover, despite choosing a quality product, it will never offer as nice a finish as hardwood flooring.

Tile

✅ Tile offers a very nice finish and can be very durable over time. Robust, it is very easy to maintain and won't fear stains.

⚠️ However, it is far from suitable for a child's room. Cold and hard, it would be more appropriate in the kitchen or bathroom for example.

Carpet

✅ Increasingly rare, carpet nevertheless remains used in bedrooms. Soft and comfortable, it is inexpensive and easy to install.

⚠️The problem is that carpet is often unhygienic. Indeed, it tends to store dust and dust mites which can create allergies in the most sensitive children. It is also very difficult to maintain over time.

What to choose?

If we had to rank the most suitable floor coverings for a child's room, here's what we would choose:

  • Floating hardwood flooring: beautiful, durable and robust, it checks all the boxes for perfect flooring in a bedroom.
  • Linoleum: more affordable than hardwood flooring, it offers many possibilities and remains comfortable.
  • Carpet: with rigorous maintenance and a child who doesn't have any particular allergies, it can find its place in a room.
  • Tile: for us, it's the least suitable solution: too hard, too cold, and too expensive for a child's room.

If you have any doubts, don't hesitate to seek advice in a hardware store, both regarding the most suitable materials and installation methods.

Why not opt for a trundle bed?

Now that you know which flooring to choose for your child's room, why not also opt for a healthy, durable, and practical solution for the bed. The trundle bed is an excellent example that combines all these criteria.

A 90x190 trundle bed looks exactly like a single bed for children. However, it hides a second bed in a drawer just below the first one to store a second bed. This way, your child will have accommodation for a friend to sleep over for a pajama party. The children's trundle bed is perfect for a small room and can also be safe and eco-friendly.

Indeed, ChambreKids trundle beds are models made with PEFC certified wood, ecological panels with low formaldehyde content, and solvent-free paint and varnish. The goal? To offer a 90x190 trundle bed that respects both children and the environment. Moreover, you can also opt for an adult trundle bed for a guest room, for example. There are also models with storage like the Milor trundle bed.
