Which baby bed to choose?

Categories: Baby's Room

How to choose the right baby bed? With the multiplied offer, parents sometimes find it hard to navigate. You must consider the space you have and think about how long you'll use the bed. Is it a bed that will only be used for the child's first months, or do you prefer a convertible baby bed that transforms according to your child's growth? There are solutions for everyone, here's the catalog.

The portable bed

During your baby's first weeks, you might want to keep them close to you. The portable bed provides the ideal situation in this case. During the day, you move your baby to the room where you are (or at least a nearby space) and during the night, you set them up in your bedroom.

The portable bed is a temporary solution: it's suitable for babies from birth up to 6-8 months. However, it has the advantage of being easily transportable. You can use it for vacations or weekends, or even for an evening at friends'. Your child thus finds their familiar bed wherever they are, which reassures them and helps them sleep better.

The Moses basket proves to be a practical temporary solution, mainly reserved for nights away from home. You can use it for the first few days at home to stay close to your child, but it will be especially useful when traveling.

There are stands designed for Moses baskets to transform them into a real small bed and place the baby at parent height.

If you lack space and have a limited budget, you can opt for a stroller that will serve as a bed for the child's first months. It's important to select a high-end model to ensure cozy sleeping. Since the baby spends the majority of their time there during the first weeks, they must feel as if in a cocoon. The stroller will be a bit more expensive to purchase, but you save on the bed price.

Moreover, you can choose a reclining mattress that places the infant in a comfortable position, especially for reflux after bottle feeding.

Finally, letting your baby sleep in their stroller allows you to move them around the house with you. It also prevents you from having to transfer them to their bed and risk waking them up.

The travel cot is a practical folding bed, lightweight, compact, and easy to assemble. It represents the most complete solution for mobile bedding. The travel cot is perfect for regular sleeping at home but adapts to all your travels. You can fold it in seconds and it takes up little space in the car.

The sleeping surface is comfortable and its large mesh walls provide complete safety for the infant.

The bed reducer is similar to a Moses basket, but without handles. Very economical, it adapts almost anywhere. You can place it on a child's bed that will be used later, but also on a couch, on your own bed, etc. The bed reducer is perfect for travel and evenings at friends' homes where you let your infant sleep quietly in your hosts' room.

The bed reducer is made of foam. It is therefore flexible and compact. The drawstring around it allows you to adjust its size.

The cardboard bed comes from Scandinavian countries. Still uncommon in France, it surprises parents who can't imagine putting their baby to sleep in a cardboard box! However, this very temporary solution has many advantages.

When you go out for the evening or travel on vacation, the cardboard serves to store your baby's accessories (diapers, bottles, changes, etc.). Once in place, you put it in a secure spot and your baby enjoys a cocoon for naps and nights.

The cardboard bed is more of a backup solution, but it can be very useful, plus it's the most economical.

Fixed solutions for baby beds

You still have a wide choice among fixed solutions. Some remain temporary, but you can also opt for a convertible baby bed that accompanies your child until adolescence.

The combination baby bed

The combination baby bed is a very interesting solution for small budgets and homes with limited space. This type of bed combines the three essential elements of a child's room: the bed, dresser, and changing table.

These are beds generally made of wood, in a clean style and pastel colors (or painted white) that adapt to all children's room decorations. The bed can be convertible, transitioning from cradle to crib, allowing you to keep it for several years.

The convertible baby bed

The convertible baby bed has the same advantages as the combination bed, as it offers storage spaces and a changing table. However, its design is even more clever as it follows your child's growth. It is modular and offers three sleeping configurations: bassinet, crib, then child's bed. At the same time, its storage evolves into a dresser, nightstand, and large storage drawer under the bed.

Thus, the convertible bed follows your child from birth through adolescence. It ultimately represents the most worthwhile investment.

The co-sleeping crib

The co-sleeping crib allows you to keep your child close to you at night, which proves practical for nursing mothers. Attached to your bed, your child is at your height and in direct contact, thanks to the absence of a partition.

You can choose a modular style that allows you to transform it into a cradle. It can then serve as a mobile solution for home or travel.

The cradle

There are many styles of cradles. You'll find models in wood or fabric (identical to a stroller, but fixed). You can choose one with bars. This makes it open and allows the baby to observe their environment. When its walls are opaque, the child is as if in a cocoon.

The cradle is not designed to be dismantled and travel. However, some models with wheels are easy to move around the house.

The baby crib

The crib is one of the classics. It is often made of wood, but you can opt for a bed with plexiglass walls. In both cases, the child cannot escape and has comfortable sleeping accommodations.

The "Montessori" method bed

According to the designer of the method that bears her name, Maria Montessori, we should not force a child to sleep. The bed should therefore be designed so that the child can move freely in their room and can go to bed and get up when they want. Specifically, the Montessori baby bed is at floor level and without bars. However, it is recommended to add a safety barrier for younger babies.
