What is a house bed?

The house bed offers an original structure, reproducing the shape of a cabin or sometimes a teepee. Its primary function remains sleeping, but the house bed is much more than that. It forms a playful space that the child makes their own. They will not only sleep there, but also spend time, play, read, and more generally develop their imagination, according to Maria Montessori's concept.

The mattress is placed on a slatted base at floor level. The house is devoid of bars, which offers total freedom of movement. The house is symbolic: it is represented by a simple frame, without walls to avoid creating a feeling of confinement. The child has a 360° view of their room. They can play on their bed, but also explore the room, without risk of falling.

The house bed is recommended from the age of 2 or 3 years. Some models offer extensions to increase durability. As the child grows, this extension allows you to go from a 90 x 140 model to a 90 x 190 model.

Which mattress to choose for a house bed?

Thickness is not a guarantee of quality for a mattress. For a child, a height of 16 centimeters is suitable, provided that the foam density is high enough to support their weight.

A good mattress should be firm, but never hard, soft, but never mushy. The child should feel comfortably installed, but should not sink into it. This would hinder their freedom of movement, as well as the position of their spine.

If you choose a house bed with a drawer for an extra sleeping space, a mattress with a height of 13 centimeters is sufficient. It allows you to store the bed with sheets, duvet, and pillow.

The raw materials of the mattress should be eco-friendly, hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, and antibacterial.

What is the ideal size for a house bed?

The traditional house bed offers a sleeping area of 90 x 140 cm. If you choose an expandable model, you have extensions for the frame and mattress that allow you to reach a dimension of 90 x 190 centimeters. This way, as your child grows, you extend the life of the bed.

House bed with barrier

The house bed is recommended from 2 or 3 years old. Being at floor level, the child is not at risk of falling out if they turn in their bed or if they suffer from insomnia and want to get up.

However, you can use removable side barriers if your child is restless in their sleep and you want to prevent them from rolling onto the floor during the night. You only need one barrier if one side of the bed is against the wall, two if it's in the middle of the room.

These barriers are recommended for younger children if you choose a house bed with a drawer that raises the sleeping area.

As the barriers are removable, you can take them off during the day to eliminate the boundary between the mattress and the play space that the room represents. You position them in the evening, at bedtime.

When you think your child is old enough to do without them, you remove them permanently.

Montessori house bed

The Montessori educational method, based on freedom and sensory education, was created by Dr. Maria Montessori. The house bed is just one element of her concept which came to life on January 6, 1907, when her first school was inaugurated in Rome.

Placing the bed at floor level, without barriers to hinder movement, promotes the freedom and autonomy advocated by Dr. Montessori. This structure encourages the child to make their own choices, which implies a certain trust from the parents.

The house bed serves several purposes.

Respecting the child's sleep rhythm

Maria Montessori believed that the child should not be forced to sleep at a fixed time, but should have some freedom and decide when they felt tired enough to go to bed.

With the house bed, they can decide to play a little longer or read in the evening and get up in case of night waking. If they are more of an early riser than their parents, they can stay and play in their room and let their parents rest a little longer.

Learning autonomy

Raising a child involves learning autonomy. With the Montessori bed, as the child is less constrained, they must make certain decisions, rather than following their parents' instructions: when they wake up, they can choose to stay in bed or get up; once up, they can also decide to go back to bed after playing if they feel tired, etc.

This learning of autonomy aims to build their self-confidence and determination from a very young age.

The development of senses

In a Montessori room, the child exercises their senses. They decide on their activity, they develop their motor skills thanks to their curiosity which pushes them to explore their environment, they apprehend space, etc.

Freedom for both the child and the parents

The child learns to occupy themselves, especially when their parents are sleeping. They can get up earlier in the morning or reduce their nap time, without needing help from their parents. They shape their schedule and no longer need to express themselves through crying and screaming when their sleep time is fulfilled.

In addition to autonomy and confidence, they manage their schedule and become more responsible.

House bed with drawer

The house bed offers a drawer option that slightly modifies its concept, as the sleeping area is slightly raised. The house bed is inspired by the concept of the trundle bed, as its drawer is the same size as the bed itself. The difference is that it doesn't have a metal structure to raise it to the same level as the sleeping area.

This drawer is intended for two distinct uses: extra sleeping space or storage space. Its dimensions correspond to the standard size of a mattress. When another child spends the night at home, you just need to pull out the drawer to offer them a spacious and comfortable sleeping area, which doesn't clutter your space when you don't need it. Indeed, you no longer need to store an inflatable structure or a folding bed that clutters your closets year-round.

If you prefer to reserve this space for storage, you have a large drawer where you can store almost anything: sheets, clothes, household linen, toys, books, etc. This way, you avoid overloading the room with a dresser or wardrobe.

Which wood to choose for making a house bed?

The best woods for making a house bed are beech, pine, or birch. It's important that they come from sustainably managed forests in respect of sustainable development.

Prefer water-based paints, without solvents, to avoid harmful emissions.
