Daybed or sofa bed in a studio: which to choose?

Categories: Children's Room

In a studio, every square meter must be utilized to maximize space. For sleeping, it's difficult to opt for a two-person 160x200 cm bed that would take up all the space. Therefore, there are different solutions that are perfectly adapted, particularly in the case of daybeds and sofa beds. So what should you choose to best furnish your studio? Here's all our advice!

What is a daybed?

The daybed is generally a single bed in a bench format, with a sofa-like structure featuring, for example, a backrest. The goal? To install the daybed against a wall to use it as a sofa during the day and a bed at night. You can opt for a 2-seater daybed with a trundle bed or a 1-seater daybed. The 2-seater daybed therefore takes up as much space as the 1-seater version.

What is a sofa bed?

A sofa bed is a sofa that can be transformed into a bed. For many years, we have relied on click-clacks and futons, but since then, there have been many other systems that provide a truly comfortable bed. A few simple manipulations are enough to transform the sofa into a bed for the night and vice versa for the day. This type of furniture exists in 2-seater, 3-seater or larger versions. The bed, however, is most often a bed for two people.

Advantages and disadvantages

In order to choose between the daybed and the sofa bed, it is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of both solutions.

The daybed

The daybed prioritizes the bed position. Indeed, the bed is already installed, you just need to remove the few cushions installed to make the bench more comfortable and you can already slip into your bed. It is therefore very practical to use. Small in size, it will have no trouble finding its place even in the most cramped spaces.

The daybed allows you to have a 90x190 cm bed or two (thanks to the second sleeping area if it's a 2-seater daybed). It also allows you to do without buying a sofa.

The sofa bed

The sofa bed prioritizes the sofa function before becoming a bed. That being said, there are now solutions that allow you to unfold and fold your bed with ease. It has the advantage of allowing you to install a double bed but is generally more bulky.

Moreover, it is important to opt for a quality model to ensure that the mattress is suitable for daily use. A poor quality mattress can lead to back pain and sleep disorders.

What criteria for choosing a daybed?

You can choose your daybed according to different criteria in order to opt for the furniture that suits you.

You can generally choose between dimensions of 90x190 cm or 90x200 cm. These are the standard dimensions for a single bed.

You can opt for different formats and designs depending on the chosen furniture. Moreover, you have the option to choose between a 1-seater daybed or a 2-seater daybed.

Choose a brand specialized in furniture design and more particularly in beds. This way, you are assured of opting for quality and durable furniture. In this sense, made in France is also an excellent choice.

Finally, price is also important when choosing a daybed. Most often, you will need to count between 350 and 600 euros for a quality daybed. Also keep in mind that adding one or two mattresses will be necessary depending on the model.

What criteria for choosing a sofa bed?

For sofa beds, the selection criteria are somewhat different. However, several elements will allow you to choose the most suitable sofa bed for your studio.

Here too, prioritize FSC or PEFC certified solid wood, ecological panels with low formaldehyde content, and you can also be interested in the textile and padding used. Choose quality padding so that the seat doesn't sag over time. For the upholstery, you have a choice between many possibilities such as fabric, velvet, cotton, linen, leather, etc.

In terms of size, that of a sofa is counted in number of seats. You can therefore opt for a 2-seater sofa bed, but there are also 3-seater, 4-seater models, etc. The higher the number of seats, the more imposing the sofa bed. So be sure to take measurements to ensure that your sofa will fit in the space dedicated to it.

There are different mechanisms for unfolding your bed from a mattress. There are futons and click-clacks which are inexpensive and rather old systems. But today there are very sophisticated systems that allow you to switch from sofa to bed and vice versa in no time.

Whether you choose a daybed or a sofa bed for your studio, be sure to consider several criteria to make the right choice.
