What dimensions for a baby crib?

The preparation of a baby's room naturally involves the bed which constitutes the centerpiece of the room. This bed will also quickly evolve with the child's growth. Here are the different stages. The children's bed sizes mentioned in this article take into account standard formats. The advantage of conforming to these baby crib dimensions makes it easy to find the mattress, comforter and sheets in a suitable size.

At Chambrekids, we offer different baby crib sizes to accompany your child's growth while adapting to your space and functionality needs. Here are the different baby crib sizes offered:

1. Baby Crib 40x80 cm

The 40x80 bed is ideal for newborns up to about 6 months. Compact and reassuring, it offers a sleeping space adapted to very young children. For example, the Calisson convertible bed includes a 40x80 cm bassinet sleeping area, then evolving to a 70x140 cm baby crib.

2. Baby Crib 60x120 cm

The standard 60x120 cm baby crib is suitable for children from birth to approximately 3 years old. It offers a comfortable and secure space for your baby's sleep. Models such as the Altéa Grey Plexiglas crib are available in this size.

3. Convertible Baby Crib 70x140 cm

The 70x140 cm convertible baby crib is designed to grow with your child. Usable from birth, it then transforms into a junior bed, extending its use until approximately 6 years old. Models such as the Archipel convertible bed or the Equilibre convertible bed are available in this size.

4. Convertible Combination Baby Crib 70x140 cm

The convertible combination bed is an all-in-one solution integrating a 70x140 cm baby crib, a dresser with changing table and storage spaces. It then transforms into a 90x190 cm child's bed, thus offering a durable and economical solution. Models such as the Madrid combination baby crib or the Bohème combination baby crib are available in this category.

5. Twin Baby Crib Convertible

Designed to accommodate twins, the Mooréa twin baby crib offers two separate sleeping spaces, each 70x140 cm. It evolves with the children, transforming into two separate junior beds. The Mooréa convertible twin baby crib is an example of this type of bed.

Depending on age, your child's size and the space available in the room, these different options will allow you to choose the bed best suited to your needs.

When they begin to be able to climb over the bars of their crib, it's time to change sleeping arrangements. After the age of 5 on average, the child has a traditional 90 x 190 cm child's bed.

You can also turn to the convertible baby crib that transforms over time and whose dimensions change. Finally, followers of the Montessori method will choose its bed which measures from 60 x 120 cm to 90 x 200 cm.

The characteristics of different baby beds

The Bassinet

The bassinet is the baby's first bed. It measures 40 × 90 cm or 45 × 90 cm, which allows the newborn to be comfortable, but without being "lost" on a mattress that is too large. The fairly close sides of the bassinet form a cocoon that gives the bassinet a protective dimension. The baby feels safe there, is soothed and can easily fall asleep.

The bassinet is offered on a structure that puts it at height. The child is closer to the parents who do not have to bend down too much to make contact with them. It also spares their back, each time they carry the baby.

The bassinet generally offers a function that allows it to rock and thus cradle the baby. It is also mounted on casters, which simplifies its movement.

The bassinet has the disadvantage of being short-lived. It is not intended to be used for long, which makes the investment not very cost-effective. Indeed, the baby grows quickly. They also begin to stand up on their own and thus take the risk of falling out of the bassinet. Depending on the newborn's precociousness, the bassinet will be used between 3 and 6 months.

The Crib

The crib is used for several years. It can even replace the bassinet at birth. In this case, you must add a Moses basket so that the child is well supported, because the mattress is still too big for them.

The dimension of a crib with bars ranges from 60 x 120 cm to 70 x 140 cm. The first is suitable on average until the age of 3 years, the second until the age of 6 years. Nothing obliges you to go through the first step, you can directly acquire the large crib if you wish to save money.

You will find all kinds of cribs, from the most traditional to cribs with options. The height of the mattress base can, for example, be adjusted. When the child is still small, you can raise the mattress base without taking the risk that they will climb over the bars. As with the bassinet, the child is at a good height, especially for being carried.

The other option most popular with parents is the side door of the crib. It allows the crib to be opened on the side to let the child out, without having to carry them.

The Plexiglas Baby Crib

The plexiglas bed is an advantageous alternative to the crib with bars. Its panels at the head and foot of the bed are solid (in wood, PVC, metal or another solid material) so that its structure remains robust, while its sides are in transparent plexiglas. The dimension of the plexiglas baby crib is 60 x 120 cm.

The transparent sides allow parents to observe their child. The child, on their side, enjoys a panoramic view of their room. They thus have every opportunity to observe their environment and develop their senses.

The Convertible Baby Crib

The convertible baby crib represents a marvel of ingenuity, as it adapts to the child's growth.

  • In its bassinet form, it is provided with a changing table and shelves used to store toiletries and linen.

  • It then transforms into a crib with bars. The additional elements are used to create a dresser and shelves.

  • Finally, the convertible bed is assembled in its final form as a child's bed, accompanied by a nightstand.

The convertible bed allows you to compact the different elements of the room, which saves you space. Moreover, it constitutes the most profitable investment, because you only have one bed to buy.

Since it is intended to follow your child until adulthood, choose a quality model to ensure its durability.

The Montessori Bed

The Montessori bed was conceived by an Italian pediatrician of the same name who believed that it is up to the child to have their own experiences and that to do this they must be given great autonomy from a very young age.

The Montessori bed offers sleeping at floor level, which allows the child to lie down or get out when they wish. They therefore do not risk falling. The child can also organize their space and in particular use their bed as a playground.

However, the Montessori bed is not recommended for a newborn. It appears preferable to wait until the child is 3 years old to give them free rein.
