Which children's bed to choose after 6 years old?

Categories: Children's Room

The age of 6 is quite significant for a child's bed, as it represents an important milestone. The child is no longer satisfied with a too-small bed; moreover, they have reached the legal age to use a raised bed. Here are the different solutions available to you for choosing a bed for a child over 6 years old.

The classic bed

The classic bed for a child over 6 years old is available in various sizes: 70 x 140, 90 x 140, 90 x 190 cm or 90 x 200 cm.

You have a very wide choice of designs and colors.

The bed can be at floor level or higher.

It can include a headboard or footboard with storage. The headboard can also serve as a nightstand.

A large drawer the same size as the mattress stored underneath provides very useful storage space.

The convertible bed

The convertible bed is an excellent compromise between a child's bed and an adult bed.

It can be used for a 6-year-old child in its first version at 90 x 140 cm. When the child starts to feel cramped, you transform it to get a 90 x 190 bed, perfect for adolescence, and even adulthood.

The convertible bed is recommended for children who need reassurance. They adapt more easily this way and have very good nights.

Moreover, the design of the convertible bed is ingenious: nothing is lost, but everything transforms. You have giant drawers under the bed that allow you to store bulky items.

The loft bed or mid-height bed

The loft bed is not allowed for children under 6 years old.

From this age, you can acquire a loft bed or a mid-height bed. The concept is the same, with a raised bed and a lower space to arrange. The only difference is that the mid-height bed is 1.20 meters from the floor, while the loft bed is higher, between 1.50 and 2.15 meters.

In both cases, you use the available space under the bed and thus save space in the room.

The layout differs depending on the child's age and tastes. The space under the mid-height bed is most often used for storage, as the child quickly becomes too tall to fit underneath. Under the loft bed, you can have closets and wardrobes, a desk set up with shelves, or a relaxation area with a small sofa. Children also love to build their fort using curtains and blankets.

Bunk beds

Bunk beds are a classic in a room hosting two children. Like the loft bed, they are allowed from the age of 6.

Perfectly secured with regulatory barriers for the top bed, bunk beds allow you to save space in the room.

Some bunk beds include clever storage solutions that save even more room space. You also have the option of convertible bunk beds: when you have more space or decide to give each child their own room, the bunk beds can be separated to become two classic children's beds.

The Montessori bed and the house bed

The Montessori bed was designed by the Italian pediatrician of the same name. It's a floor bed designed to promote young children's development. The goal is to help them gain autonomy at their own pace, in a more flexible context: the bed is at floor level, the child can get in and out when they want, and the bed can also be transformed into a play or reading area.

Some parents choose the Montessori bed from an early age. However, it's better to wait until the child is 3 years old and already sufficiently autonomous. In any case, the Montessori bed is perfect for a child over 6 years old. It allows them to develop at their own pace and organize their room as they wish.

The Montessori bed exists in a "house" version. It follows the concept of the floor-level bed but adds an upper structure in the shape of a house. This structure is openwork, meaning there are no walls or roof. However, if the child wishes, they can use sheets or blankets to really have the protection of the house. They also have the possibility to decorate their house with garlands, hang drawings, etc. The house bed is very popular with children who decorate it to their taste.

The trundle bed

The trundle bed is designed for two children or two teenagers to sleep.

The main bed conceals another bed for additional sleeping space. It's valued for its ease of use: the lower bed is retractable and stores ready to use, including duvet or sheets; you just need to pull on its metal frame for it to unfold and the second bed positions itself next to the first one, thanks to its wheels.

Both beds are at the same height but separated from each other. They are slightly higher than average but perfectly suitable for all children over 6 years old.

The daybed

The daybed works on the same principle as the trundle bed. The difference is in the bed once folded, which is then used as a bench. If you're desperately short on space in your child's room and/or if two of your children must share the same room, the daybed offers them a sofa space during the day that transforms into a bed at night.

The daybed represents an excellent opportunity to optimize space in a child's room. For this bed, as with the trundle bed, focus on the manufacturer's quality to ensure that the second bed is just as comfortable as the main bed.
