Baby crib in parents' bedroom: for or against?
For many parents, it is more reassuring to set up baby in their room, at least during their first months of life. For others, baby can be set up in their own room. So which method is most recommended? How to proceed if you want to set up baby in the parental bedroom? How to get them to sleep in their own room afterwards? We explain everything!
Why sleep in the same room as baby?
If many parents decide to share the same room as baby, it's not without reason. Indeed, the World Health Organization recommends sharing the same room as your baby at least until they are 6 months old. The goal is primarily to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
Moreover, mothers who choose to breastfeed will find it much easier to feed their baby in the middle of the night if they are nearby.
If only for the safety of your child, it is therefore recommended to keep baby in the parental bedroom during their first months. However, parents will also need to regain their privacy, which is why at one point or another, your child will have to sleep in their own room.
How to properly set up baby in the parents' room?
If you have decided to set up your baby in your room, there are several methods depending on your preference. First of all, know that it is not at all recommended to put baby in your bed. Indeed, the risk of suffocation is too high. Your child should therefore be in your room, but not in the same bed as you.
Choosing the bed
You can then install a cradle near your bed. Small in size, the cradle can be used until the age of 6 months. To limit expenses, why not choose a convertible baby bed? The convertible baby bed can be a cradle, then transform into a crib and finally into a child's bed. With a PEFC certified wooden convertible baby bed, you opt for an eco-responsible solution. We recommend choosing a convertible baby bed with low formaldehyde materials and solvent-free paint to limit baby's exposure to volatile organic compounds. The convertible baby bed is a very good way to enjoy an all-in-one piece of furniture.
You can also opt for what is called a co-sleeping baby bed. The co-sleeping bed is a baby bed that attaches to the parents' bed and has one open side. Thus, your child is at your height and you encounter no obstacle to reach them without risking suffocation. It's a very practical solution, especially for breastfeeding mothers.
When your baby is over 6 months old, you can place them in a convertible baby bed in crib format like our Icone model for example. From then on, all sorts of solutions are available to you with, as we said, the convertible baby bed, but also an original baby bed like a plexiglass baby bed or even a combination baby bed that combines several pieces of furniture in one.
Precautions to take in the room
When baby sleeps in the parental bedroom, certain precautions must be taken. The room temperature should be between 18°C and 20°C in winter. It is also important that the humidity level in the baby's room be between 40% and 60%. There should be no animals in the room and dusting should be done regularly. No screens should be on when baby is present in the room. It is important to take the same precautions as in a child's room so that baby can sleep safely in the parents' room.
How to get baby to sleep in their own room?
Once your child is over 6 months old, the risk of sudden infant death syndrome is much less present. You can consider setting them up in their own room if you wish. It's important to make this choice when you feel that your child is ready for this change.
From then on, you can start by helping them become familiar with this room by spending a little more time there during playtime, for example. Then, you can suggest that your child take their naps in their bed and in their room. This can be a first approach for baby to feel more comfortable in this environment and learn to find sleep there alone.
Then, you can try to put them to bed in their room for the first night. Be sure to go through the usual evening ritual before putting baby to bed in their room, they must feel as reassured as possible. Talk to them, explain that you're just next door and that you can hear them perfectly. It's possible that this first evening won't be a success and that's okay, it's important to respect baby's rhythm and try the experience again another time.
If after several months and different attempts, you still can't get baby to sleep in their convertible baby bed in their room, perhaps it would be wise to seek recommendations from a sleep consultant. You can also ask your pediatrician or your midwife for their opinion.
In any case, be patient and listen, baby will eventually find a way to sleep in their bed peacefully.
