Setting up a cozy guest room

If you have relatives who live far away, or simply after a night of heavy drinking, having a cozy and welcoming guest room is a big plus. In order to receive your guests properly, you will take special care in furnishing this room, which is often neglected. We will therefore remedy this with different tips that will allow you to set up a guest room that is both pleasant and practical to use, especially if it has another use the rest of the time.

Why have a guest room?

Having a guest room is a real plus in a house or apartment. It means you can accommodate your friends or family for one night or a longer stay without disrupting the organization of the house. Indeed, a sofa bed unfolded in the middle of the living room always implies some adaptation. With a guest room, your guests have their privacy and a space to sleep comfortably when they come to visit you at home.

Creating a room with two uses

The guest room is only used occasionally, so it can have two uses so that this space is not wasted the rest of the time. Several possibilities can then be considered:

  • Desk
  • Dressing room
  • Playroom for children
  • Gym
  • Gaming
  • Art studio

In fact, anything is possible as long as you have the necessary space and you find a way to make the two uses of the room coexist.

What bed for a small guest room?

If you have a small guest room (it's often the smallest room that is dedicated to this use) or if this space has two uses, you will need a functional bed, such as a daybed, for example.

It's not always easy to know how to choose the bed for your guest room. Therefore, you can opt for a daybed. The daybed is a bed that also finds use during the day as it will serve as seating. A single daybed is therefore a small bench during the day and a single bed at night. There is also what we call a double daybed like our BOREAL daybed. A double daybed has a drawer bed in which there is a second pull-out bed. This is called a trundle daybed. Whether you opt for a single or double daybed, the daybed is a very good choice in a small guest room.

What bed for a large guest room?

In a large guest room, you can of course opt for a daybed if you want to keep space for something else, but you also have the possibility to choose a large comfortable bed for your guests. You can thus opt for a double bed for adults. From then on, you have the possibility to choose from several dimensions such as:

  • 140x190 cm;
  • 140x200 cm;
  • 160x200 cm;

If you want to keep space for storage, you can particularly opt for a storage bed. The bed base is lifted thanks to a piston system, and you can store many items in it.

How to make a room pleasant?

Once the choice of bed is made, several other elements will allow you to create a cozy and pleasant environment.

What are the appropriate colors for this room?

Regarding colors, it is often recommended to opt for something neutral and/or soft so that the decoration is soothing for your guests. If you don't want white walls, you can opt for beige, sage green, blue-gray, powder pink, etc. Avoid colors that are too bright, as they tend to affect sleep.

When in doubt, opt for earth tones with a monochromatic scheme to ensure that everything is perfectly matched.

What furniture to add besides the bed?

In addition to the bed, you can complement the guest room with furniture such as:

  • A chest of drawers or a wardrobe for your guests to store their belongings if they stay for several nights.
  • A small desk or a dressing table, complemented by a comfortable chair.
  • A nice armchair to have seating in the room.
  • Two bedside tables for your guests to place their glasses, smartphone...

What are the essential decor elements?

In terms of decor, certain elements will transform a classic guest room into a cozy and pleasant space. You can particularly focus on curtains that will allow you to dim the light and gain privacy. The presence of a mirror is also very appreciated in a bedroom, whether it's a small model or a full-length mirror. You can also opt for a rug which will make the place even more welcoming. Don't forget to add a nice accent lamp or bedside lamps and some framed pictures on the wall.

By taking care of the decoration, you create a warm environment, but also one that reflects your personality.

What are the details that make a difference?

Finally, some small details can make a difference such as:

  • A box containing disposable tissues.
  • Providing bath linens.
  • An extra blanket.
  • A bottle of water for each guest.
  • A television.
  • Some books.

You can draw inspiration from what you find in hotels and the little touches that you particularly like to ensure you receive your guests with care. You can even leave a little note for your guests to wish them good night!
